MAN AT WORK

My next portrait subject is someone you might recognize from the past. He was the lead singer in the band MEN AT WORK. It is the mighty COLIN HAY.

After breaking up with the band, Colin struck out on his own solo career. He never achieved the same kind of pop notoriety for his solo work but has developed a loyal, devoted following. My husband, after hearing some of his solo work on the t.v. series, SCRUBS, became a big fan and was constantly playing his music around the house which really started growing on me.

It just so happened that Colin was going to be playing at Chautauqua auditorium which is very close to where we live and a beautiful, small, intimate venue. The inside is built like the center of a guitar so the acoustics are superb. It is nestled right at the foothills of the mountains so many people bring chairs and sit outside on summer nights enjoying the panoramic mountain scenes and the sounds of the concert drifting outside. It really is wonderful. I got my husband tickets as a birthday present and figured, even if I didn’t know a lot of the music, it would be a fun night out.

It turned out to be one of my favorite concerts of all time! Have you ever had the experience of listening to a song for the first time and it articulates the exact feeling and sentiment that you have been holding but not able to express? Well that is what that whole concert felt like. Colin has such an incredible gift for a live performance. He is a first rate story teller with both his songs and all the talk in between them. He is vulnerable, hilariously funny (wicked sense of humor), and the music is so touching!

Can’t WAIT to see him again!!!! If you get a chance to see him, you will not regret it! He is *AMAZING*!

I tried something a little different here. I made the portrait several inches larger than usual. While it took a lot longer to complete, the there is a lot more detail in the skin color and facial hair.

The beard was one of my favorite parts, especially the little curls at the bottom.

Is this not the perfect face for a storyteller? Filled with character and just a hint of an impish smile.

It his hard to see in the photo but I love to add a few sparkly threads to the hair.

I would love to keep going a little bigger to compare the difference in detail.

COLIN HAY!!!!!!! He’s the best.

Thanks for visiting and joining me in superfan portrait adventures!

Hope you are staying warm and cozy!
