THE POLKA DOT ARTIST: YAYOI KUSAMA

I recently watched a documentary about Yayoi Kusama. You may have seen her artwork. She is very famous for her polka dot installations. She has had an AMAZING journey as an artist, a female, and a human being.

She always knew she wanted to be an artist from a very young age and faced many obstacles along the way but always stayed true to her passion. She didn’t achieve the recognition and respect of the art world until much later in her life when she was hardly expecting it. If you get a chance to see the documentary, it is a very interesting watch and is called KUSAMA:INFINITY.

I knew as soon as I saw her that I wanted to do her portrait. Kind of a no-brainer………

I am playing with the idea of adding the pom-poms. They aren’t attached yet but I just wanted to see how they looked.

She has such an intense stare from those dark eyes, contrasting with that fabulous hair. Her hair is filled with lots of bright highlights and I found it so invigorating to work with such bright colors.

I debated sewing pom-poms on her shirt but decided to hand sew them instead. I worried that the pom-poms might take away from the thread painted look of the portrait and turn it into something that looks more craft-ish.

Well, here she is, all finished.

Hope you are all doing well. I am trying to stay positive and enjoy the little magical moments when I find them.
