A COMMISSIONED PET PORTRAIT

I was commissioned to make a pet portrait. It was such a fun change from doing people but, in a way, it is not much different. I still make a connection with the portrait as I am stitching and feel a certain intimacy when I am finished, in the sense that I feel I have gotten to know my subject a little. It always strikes me when I bring the eyes to life. I really feel the presence then.

Here she is.I like to ask the owner a little bit about the dog before I start. It is nice to have a sense of the personality as I stitch. I also love knowing about little traits and eccentricities. This pup loved chasing frisbees and had an amazing vertical leap. She was perpetually happy, and great with babies, other dogs, and cats.

She definitely has happy, gentle eyes, doesn’t she?
