GEORGE "I WILL NOT TELL A LIE" WASHINGTON

I have been thinking about Thanksgiving.

It’s been a difficult year but even in the darkest of times there are still lots of things to be grateful for. I was wondering what kind of portrait I should make to represent the holiday when the perfect image came to mind. Who better to make then the man who first declared this holiday; GEORGE WASHINGTON himself, our very first president. How fitting, right?

I loved bringing this image to life in thread. I imagined the questions I would ask him if I could have him over for dinner. What would he think of the current state of affairs? I’m sure he never could have imagined the present day conundrums. I wonder what types of things he would have done differently had he known.

This could be the next Bill and Ted’s movie adventure.

The reference image I used was a beautiful oil painting. I loved the colors but it was challenging to recreate the softness of the oil. His eyes were really dark so I had to make those up. I read he had a blue gray color. I bet those steely eyes could be intimidating.

The lacy scarf was probably the most challenging parts of the piece.

His hair was really fun to create. I guess that was his powdered wig. I wonder if he was a brunette underneath, as the picture seems to hint at.

Well, not much new going on around here. Our schools have closed again so everyone is home and there is a different, ever shifting sense of time.

While there are lots of difficulties this year, I am grateful to spend so much stolen time with my kids. We are eating together and watching a lot of sentimental movies from their childhood when they are not working on their virtual schoolwork. There’s such a sweetness in that, especially because I know it is temporary.

I hope you can all find something a little sweet to feel thankful for!
