I love tassels. They are such a nice adornment on a bookmark, card, zipper pull, pouch or purse. They are so easy to make. All you need is some yarn, a small piece of cardboard, scissors, a tapestry needle, and a clip (such as a paper or wooden clip). It takes about 10 minutes.
Start by cutting a small piece of card board. This piece is 2 inches wide by 3.5 inches long.
Get your yarn and start to wind it around the card board piece, lengthwise.
You want to wind it pretty evenly but not so tight that it bends the card board.
Snip off the end when you are satisfied with your wrapping job.
This is where your little clip comes in handy.
Get a needle with a big eye (I used a tapestry needle.) Cut a nice long piece of yarn (about about 30 inches). Thread your needle so it is right in the middle of the piece you just cut.
Guide your needle under the yarn at the top. It is hard to tell from the picture because the cardboard is bent back a little but the needle is going right under the yarn but on top of the cardboard. Don't pull it all the way through.
Using the end of the thread that you did not pull all the way through, make a loose knot. You can tighten it a little more easily once you cut the bottom.
Snip all the bottom threads then go back to the top and tighten the knot.
Here is what you have once you have cut the bottom and tightened your knot at the top.
Wrap the thread around the tassel a couple of times about 1/2 inch from the top.
Now work the needle up from the bottom of the tassel and pull it through the top as close to the middle of the tassel as you can get it.
Trim the bottom so the threads are even and trim the needle off the top, Now your tassel is ready to be attached!
It's fun to try out different kinds of yarn. I love the variegated for this project.
This would be fantastic paired with this FREE PRINTABLE PROJECT as well as these FREE PRINTABLE BOOKMARKS and if you are looking for even more ideas I have plenty of printables available at my Etsy shop.
Thanks for stopping by!
Warmly,
